Anime That Has Sad Ending- Let’s Cry Together!

21. Plastic Memories

This anime follows the story of Isla (Giftia) and Tsukasa. Giftia is an android mainly a result of Artificial Intelligence. It’s hard to differentiate between a Giftia and a human just by looking at them.

This anime is all about the progressing relationship between Isla and Tsukasa.

Don’t worry, it’s also sad, no anime on the list has a happy ending. In the end, it was revealed that Isla only has a limited lifespan—mainly because she was not a human in the first place. Which is the most frustrating part of the anime!

So, without a doubt, Plastic Memories has a tragic end!

Suggested: Anime that will make you cry

20. A Silent Voice

Overall, the anime was sad. Both the protagonists were trying to cope with their lives. Shoya tried his best not to listen to the people. They were the people who named him a bully. They always blamed Shoya for Shoko’s suffering.

On the other hand, since Shoko was deaf she had to face bullies at every single point. She decides to accept it and move forward. By the end of the anime, Shoya apologizes to Shoko for all his mistakes and learns to accept people for who they are.

He comes to terms with the fact that there are all kinds of people, good or bad. Moreover, all of them have a voice. One cannot just simply mark a cross on their faces to ignore reality.

19. True Tears

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
18/20 8/10 8/10 8/10 42/50

True tears are all about tears, and therefore it never forgets to make its fans cry. The plot revolves around Hiromi and Shinichiro. Hiromi’s life became dull soon after her father passed away. Shinichiro, who admired Hiromi and her smile, has also become sad whenever he’s looking at her.

There is not much in the anime that we can call a happy part. In fact, for me, this anime is sad right from the beginning. There is much more to the story behind True Tears (Which is to be found by you). I hope you will cry a lot watching this anime. (though I really don’t want you to cry).

18.   Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Who doesn’t know about this epic anime? Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood both are famous for one reason or another. If you’re looking for an anime with a sad ending, then this is incomparable.

The story revolves around the Elric brothers who after performing human transmutation lost their body parts. They wanted to bring back their late mother. The anime progresses further in the search for Philosopher’s stone to get what they’ve lost.

Who would have thought both the brothers would have a tragic end? Yes, FMAB has the saddest end. (I couldn’t bear that). (Let me tell you something, the story has a twist as well, so you can’t afford to miss this).

17. Vampire Knight

I am a huge fan of the anime mainly because of its character named, Kaname Kuran. This is a beautiful love story of gorgeous vampires. Two heroes are in love with a girl named Yuki. Among them, one is my very own Kaname.

It’s an overall great story but the part that makes it sad is Yuki doesn’t end up with Kaname. She was confused till the end. Moreover, due to her confusion, she broke hearts on-screen and off-screen.

Well, this anime is sad for the majority of people.

The ones who like Yuki with the other guy consider the end satisfying. In short, it depends totally on your perspective. It was sad precisely because Kaname sacrificed his heart for the girl he loved. However, there is one more little surprise for you guys, so don’t miss it.

16. Akame Ga Kill

Akame Ga Kill

The story revolves around Tatsumi and his adventurous yet dangerous life. This has a lot of drama, action, and emotional scenes as well. The reason why it is considered sad is because many characters die in the anime.

This is also the reason why the end of Akame Ga Kill is considered sad. Overall it’s a fantastic anime that includes action, suspense, drama, and whatnot!

15. Grave of the Fireflies

grave of the fireflies

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
20/20 10/10 8/10 7/10 45/50

This is one of the most disturbing movies that highlight the harsh realities of life. Well, the story revolves around two siblings, Seita (brother) and Setsuko (sister). After the death of their mother, their lives became horrible. They started living with their aunt but she started showing her true colors.

After escaping from their aunt’s house, both main leads faced a lot of problems. They had nothing to make both ends meet. Setsuko’s condition was worsening day by day because of malnutrition. Unfortunately, all the struggles of Seita to keep his sister alive went all in vain.

In short, it was the saddest anime movie right from the beginning.

14. Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop is an old anime, but the plot? No worries, it’s not as outdated as you think it is!  Well that’s because it’s set in the year 2071 when technology is at its peak. The story begins when the moon somehow gets damaged. This results in opening the gate for meteorites to enter the earth.

Therefore, humanity decides to move to another planet for survival. (sounds scary and adventurous at the same time). Though sadly, people are dying because of meteorites, the even sadder part is the death of someone dear to Spike. (I won’t reveal who dies). (This is what makes it the saddest and most tragic story).

13. 5 Centimeters per Second

It’s a pretty popular love story. The story revolves around two childhood friends. It was decided that both will stay together forever. We all know that what we think never happens, so is the case with them.

The problem begins when one has to shift to another city.

This anime movie has a lot of drama as well, so surely you will not be bored. Plus, the part that makes it the saddest is the end of their dream to be together.

12. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
20/20 10/10 9/10 7/10 45/50

This is a very emotional anime as it highlights the lives of people after natural disasters. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is referring to the earthquake magnitude. Yuki and Mirai both are siblings who have lost their ways due to disasters.

They both are joined by another character who is also looking for her family. Each and every scene will make you emotional. It’s believed that this anime is based on a true story. We all know most of the true stories have a sad ending.

11. I Want To Eat Your Pancreas

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
20/20 8/10 9/10 9/10 46/50

It’s another heartbreaking anime. The plot revolves around Haruki and Sakura. Sakura is a popular girl who has a secret. The secret is her pancreatic illness. Sakura’s secret is discovered by her classmate none other than Haruki.

Later on, a lot happened and both started developing feelings for each other. There is a lot of drama and emotional scenes in between. If you’re thinking that this is one of those shows where it has a typical and expected ending, welp, you just have to wait for the plot twist.

I am not gonna spoil it so you could bawl your eyes out as much as I did. Well, it’s not like I have the courage to spoil it anyway, HAHA! So, good luck!

10. Darling in the Franxx

Darling in the Franxx is an amazing anime. It’s set in the age of advanced technology so you can’t predict something. The world is in a post-apocalyptic state. They have their own system and concept of living there. (which is pretty complex to explain as well).

Well, it’s a dramatic love story between Zero Two and Hiro. It’s a pretty sad and somehow satisfying end as well. Many fans considered it as a controversial ending. It was too sad for me!

9. Your Lie In April

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
20/20 9/10 9/10 9/10 47/50

Not gonna lie, this is a very sad story. So, if you can bear sad endings to a love story, then this is for you. It’s about a pianist guy, Kosei, and a violinist girl, Kaori. After the death of Kosei’s mother, he stopped his journey as a pianist.

Kosei was living his dull life without music until Kaori entered his life and changed everything. She brought back music to Kosei’s life and he started his musical journey again. Here comes the saddest part, Kaori and Kosei had decided to perform together in a gala.

Now guess what? Kaori did attend the event but Kosei suddenly couldn’t touch her. Ask why? Welp, that’s for you to find out! WAHAHAHA!

8. Death Note

Death Note

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
18/20 10/10 10/10 9/10 47/50

Who doesn’t know the legendary Kira and L? Death Note is a masterpiece when it comes to anime that has the touch of intelligence. Though Kira (antagonist and protagonist at the same time) did kill many people, his fans still loved him.

The death of certain characters at the end of the series is the most heartbreaking part. ( Yes, I won’t tell you who dies). Well, for some that might be satisfying. Secondly, this anime is full of multiple emotional rides. All its characters spellbind the audience with a strong grip. I can bet on it! So, don’t forget to give this one a try.

7. Clannad After Story

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
20/20 9/10 9/10 9/10 47/50

Clannad is a very popular anime mainly because of the couple (Nagisa and Tomoya). The thing that breaks my heart the most is Clannad After Story. In the beginning, both started their relationship. Everything was fine till Nagisa got pregnant and bedridden due to some illness.

Tomoya had to work hard as an electrician to make both ends meet. After Nagisa’s delivery, she died soon after giving birth to her daughter, Ushio. The story progresses and the father-daughter relationship is highlighted. But wait, if you thought that the nightmare is done, well you are very wrong, because the worst  has yet to come.

(Ah man, why? This was by far the saddest anime I watched)

6. Angel Beats

Angel beats

I bet you must have heard about this anime and some of you might have watched it. Angel Beats is a fantastic story having an interesting concept of the afterlife, reincarnation, and of course, accepting the harsh realities.

The plot revolves around Otonashi and Angel. They both help each other in their toughest moments. Angel Beats isn’t mainly about romance, it has a lot of drama and adventure. The ending of Angel Beats is considered pretty sad and emotional.

There would be no fun if I gave you a major spoiler, right?

5. Into the Forest Of Fireflies Lightinto the forest of fireflies light

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
18/20 10/10 10/10 10/10 48/50

This is the love story of a mountain god and a six-year-old named Hotaru. (sounds weird, right?). No worries, if it sounds weird it won’t later. The story begins when the girl was lost in the forest and he found a masked man who could help her.

However, she was not allowed to touch him as he was a spirit. After getting help from the masked guy named Gin, she found her way. This is the beginning dude, from there onwards, the girl keeps visiting him in the forest. (yeah, even after Gin forbids her to).

A series of incidents takes place later on and love blooms between them. I desperately want to reveal the story but I can’t because there will be nothing left for you to watch. So have a good time watching it.

4. Code Geass

Code Geass

19/20 10/10 10/10 9/10 48/50

The plot revolves around a handsome Britannian student named Lelouch. He hated his father because he considered him responsible for his mother’s death. Lelouch starts his journey as a rebel. This anime has a historical touch (Britannia, Kingdoms, and all) including a bit of politics.

Whether you believe it or not, no one finished this anime without being heartbroken!

3. Naruto

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
19/20 10/10 10/10 9/10 48/50

Well, Naruto is a legendary anime and it does have a happy ending. However, the reason why I am adding it to the list is because of the death of characters be it villains or heroes. For a Naruto fan, the ending will always be emotional and sad. (bittersweet, in fact)

There were characters who were missed. So, it’s a perfect anime with a mix of emotions.

2. Assassination Classroom

Assassination Classroom

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
20/20 10/10 10/10 9/10 49/50

Whenever I think about anime that has a sad ending, Assassination Classroom will ALWAYS be on the list. This is a story of assassinations prepared in a classroom. If there is a classroom, there must be a teacher, right?

Well, he is Koro Sensei, the love of my life. (literally, he is the best teacher I have seen). He is also the one who destroyed 70% of the moon. Plus, he challenged to destroy the Earth afterward.

Wait, he is not a bad guy! Can you imagine that he taught his students the techniques to stop him? This anime has a sad ending and I am sure you must have guessed it by now!

1. Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden

Impact Plot Character Writing Animation Total
20/20 10/10 10/10 10/10 50/50

I really enjoyed the concept of this story. There are auto memory dolls who help people write the feelings they want to convey. So, in short, these dolls are like a writer that can come to home after a request. Violet Evergarden is an auto memory doll and the story revolves around her journey.

This is one of the saddest and people like me can’t stop shedding tears. It’s not necessary that if someone dies at the end only then we should cry. The plot highlights the love story of Violet and Gilbert (human). Plus, the story revolves around Violet finding the meaning of I LOVE YOU! She tries her best to become a human and never wanted to be treated as a tool.

It’s a simple and sweet story, so there aren’t any major spoilers for it.

Koro Sensei

Okay weebs, these were all the entries that had a sad ending. I hope we all know that it’s not necessary to kill the protagonists to make it sad. It can be sad due to many reasons depending upon the perspectives. There are movies as there are series in the entries. I made sure you can have a variety to choose from!

For me, all of them were emotional for one reason or another. However, it really depends on

the person watching these anime. I hope you will like at least one of them. Let me know in the comments about your favorite one among them!
